THE SWADESHI AND BOYCOTT MOVEMENT OF THE BRITISH GOODS: GANDHIAN IDEOLOGY OF EMPOWERMENT AND INDIA’S STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE

Abstract :

This article seeks to examine the genesis of Swadeshi and Boycott movement in India and why did the nationalists identify the idea of Swadeshi and strongly propagated for the boycott of British goods? It has also been argued that India had been producing the best quality of textiles in the world. The Muslin of Dacca that India provided for the clothing of the world and the Queens of Italy and Rome prided themselves on their being dressed in the Muslin of India that came to an end and there was the rise of British factories has also been discussed. The shortcomings of the Swadeshi and boycott movement at its initial phase have also been deliberated. The role of vernacular literature, published from Bengal and elsewhere, to propagate the idea of swadeshi and boycott has also been evaluated in this article. Besides, how this movement got momentum and acquired mass support under Mahatma Gandhi has also been evaluated.
