The concept of status and role have been widely used by social scientists to understand the position of an individual or a group in the society. According to Linton (1936) status means a position in a social system occupied by designated individuals and the role means the behavioural patterned expectations attributed to their status. Both status and role are derived from culturally defined expectations of behaviour patterned and inherent relationships which Merton (1957) calls as the social structure. The term status also signifies the culturally ascribed roles to the individuals and even to the groups which have to be played according to the cultural norms. The concept of status and role also connotes the notions of rights and obligations of super-ordination and subordination in relation to power, authority and grading.
