EXACT SOLUTION FOR DIFFUSION IN THE FLOW OF VISCOUS FLUIDS

The diffusion in the flow of incompressible viscous fluids past a stationary circular cylinder has been discussed when the lighter component is present in a small quantity. It is assumed that the thicknesses of the viscous and boundary layer are of the same order. It is found that the pressure gradient created by the curvature of the cylinder in the boundary layer region separates the of the mixture in such a way that the concentration ratio of the heavier component of the mixture near the surface of cylinder is more than that it is maintained in the free flow region i.e. the heaver component is deposited on the surface of the cylinder. This superlative effect increases with the increase of the free stream velocity and the difference of the two components. There is no separation of the components if the pressure gradient is ignored.
