India occupies second position in the world in tribal population next to Africa. According to 2011 census, there are about 573 tribes with 104.2 million population constituting 8.6 percent of the country’s population. Scheduled tribal communities reside in about 15 percent of the country’s areas, in various ecological and geoclimatic conditions ranging from plains, forests, hills to inaccessible areas. Poverty in deepest among the scheduled tribes in the country. India’s poorest people include 50 percent of the people of the scheduled tribes.
